Project: ‘Strength and Obedience’ Imperial propaganda

In the course of a recent apartment move, I realized that I had a large project kicking around that I never got around to sharing when I finished it (probably because it’s not technically finished! πŸ˜‰

Just a teaser…full image after the jump!

Around the same time I was painting my ‘Liberty For All!’ poster, I decided I wanted to diversify my propaganda game. Browsing through the Star Wars: Propaganda art book, there weren’t many Rebel examples that either spoke to me or would be achievable at my painting skill-level at the time. However, I liked this particular piece’s simple composition, and welcomed the challenge of painting all the little greeblies that make the ISD-II such a compelling spacecraft design.
Strength_&_ObedienceWhile I definitely don’t agree with its intended message, I felt I could make it serve my purposes, albeit with a little rattle-can modification along these lines:

Splitting my time between this and my Liberty! poster, and over the course of (I think) three SW audiobooks, I wound up with this (21 x 27 inches):

I’m very pleased with the final product, but I’ve come to a terrible dilemma: after spending so much time and effort painting all those hull details, I can’t bring myself to spray-paint over them! Which means that I currently have a piece of Space-Nazi propaganda collecting dust in my apartment. The whole point of this project was to counter the fascist vibe, which would be easy to do if I didn’t paint it myself – if it was just a poster, it’d be no problem to deface! I suppose I could sell it to some gung-ho 501st buckethead, but those guys always weird me out just a little bit (more on that later, maybe).

Perhaps I could still spray out the words, but instead add some attacking Rebel ships, and a few explosions showing victory over the ImpStars? Hmm. It’s a quandary for sure…any suggestions? Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. That would be quite the artistic graffiti artist to so thoughtfully subvert propaganda to alter the piece rather than just defacing it. It also suggests the subversive had a good amount of time to pull off the job. Your original idea seems more plausible, but I ask myself, “How would Sabine do it?”

Also interested in your thoughts on the 501st.
