Searching for AgriCorps style

It’s somehow been several (4.5?!) years since first I first ventured forth to do some first-person galactic interpretation, and as you would expect in a hobby geared towards constant tinkering and improvement, I’ve made plenty of changes to that impression since then. In the coming months, I plan to roll out some ‘complete kit’ breakdowns for my various Star Wars living-history personas. In the case of my ex-Agricultural Corps Jedi impression, I realized that a kit breakdown wouldn’t be the right place for fully detailing the research that went into said impression…especially since I portray him long after the Corps has been dissolved!
What’s more, a recent addition to our community in the SWLH facebook group expressed great interest in pursuing an AgriCorps impression, so I wanted to use this post and lay out the few bits of information I’ve been able to dig up–not only for their benefit, but for anyone else who might be thinking about such a persona. If you have an interest in gardening, botany, biology, geology, or environmental science and want to apply it to the Galaxy Far Far Away, consider the AgriCorps!

Compared to the larger Order as a whole, our sample size of analyzable visual examples for the Service Corps (and AgriCorps specifically) is a miniscule—only nine.

This generic Mohawk’d fellow comes from the Power of the Jedi Sourcebook (2002), while The Jedi Path (circa 115 BBY) gives us six more individuals, plus a generic Service Corps member:

Finally, the webcomics Act on Instinct and The Valsedian Operation* gave us Sanya, a female Devaronian AgriCorps member during the Clone War. While she should be our most valuable resource for visual analysis, unfortunately being drawn by a number of artists mean her depictions are often very inconsistent.
*Special thanks and shout-out to Joe Bongiorno of Star Wars Timeline Dot Net, who helped hook me up with great copies of these pieces of lost content.

While there are a few other known members of the AgriCorps, those encountered in text sources are not given useful phyiscal descriptions, while others like Gwellib Ap-Llewff or Nod Lorian are only encountered well before or after their time in the Service Corps. I will say that before the plot kicks in, the AgriCorps protagonist of Red Harvest (set 3650 BBY) dresses in a “lab frock and hood”.
Despite this, from our limited sample I can note several general trends that may be helpful to those pursuing their own AgriCorps impression.

-AgriCorps workers wear tunics in shades of blue (#3, 5, 6, 7, 9) OR brown (#1, 2, 4). As evidence of her inconsistent depictions, Sanya is first drawn wearing a dark blue outfit, but subsequent artists turn this into a dark gray or nearly black outfit, which seems at odds–even for a washout–with the general Jedi dress of the Prequel era.
-Membership in the Service Corps–at least in the earlier period–seems to be traditionally designated through the use of a dark contrasting collar on the outer tunic (#2, 3, 5, and 8; possibly 4).
-AgriCorps members sometimes wear forearm wraps on their outer tunics to keep their outer tunic sleeves under control (#3 4, 8, 9), barring this they may roll their large sleeves up (#1, 2).

-Also note that none of our examples seem to be wearing the so-called ‘tabards’ as part of their outfits—they simply wear an inner and outer tunic, rarely with an obi sash to hold everything together (#1, 2, 8). While one artist appears to give Sanya tabards, I believe this is due to artistic inconsistency, and her wide-shouldered look is not due to tabards but a Prequel-style ‘shoulder tuck’ on her outer tunic.

-When it comes to footwear, #2 wears some kind of bound puttees, but beyond that your guess is as good as mine; the middle image of Sanya has lines which also suggest puttees, but this is unclear in other images. When I first put my kit together, I figured that Service Corps footwear should be simpler and more economical than the tall leather boots of Knights and Masters in the Prequels.

-perhaps most important in the budgeting stage of persona development is this consideration: none of these Jedi have a lightsaber! (Well, #1 miiiight?… but that silver thing on his belt could also be a canteen or some kind of tool. Honestly, he’s so generic and context-free, appearing in a source published when the idea of the AgriCorps wasn’t quite nailed down…he’s a great illustration for the idea of the AgriCorps, but not very useful as a research resource…I’m tempted to just dismiss him entirely).
If folks realized it was possible to portray a Jedi and not have to shell out the big bucks for fancy boots, belt, and glowstick, maybe we’d start seeing more AgriCorps reenactors!

Anyway, with this small of a sample, that’s about all we can say! If you are interested in depicting an Agricultural Corps Jedi in the 100-19 BBY period, your impression would be most accurate if it incorporates the above details!
Have you come across a source I haven’t mentioned above? Does the ‘High Republic’ media project give any details on the Service Corps uniform? Let me know in a comment below, or come join the discussion at the SWLH facebook group! MTFBWY!
