Galaxy’s Edge merch: Credit Chip

Unlike the $100 Black Spire Gift Card, this item is simply a $60, heavy lump of metal with a Republic credit symbol (Resh with two strokes) and etched lines on the back side, with only passing resemblance to what has existed for 20+ years:

This isn’t even a case of them ignoring earlier materials from the EU days…the first image was first published in 1999 but was reprinted by Disney in their 2017 Complete Visual Encylopedia. So it’s especially disappointing that they couldn’t figure a way to include the details in black. A truly accurate credit chip has remained elusive, but if possible would be something every interpreter should have in a pocket.

“…Few galactic citizens ever see actual cash; instead, their income is deposited directly into their credit account. … The credit chip is a small, flat card that features a security codeout and credit algorithm memory stripes. The chip can hold a specified number of credit appropriate to the government that issued it, or it can be programmed to draw from a specific amount held by the user.” – SWRPG Revised Core Rulebook (Wizards of the Coast) p.141.

Instead of shelling out $60 for the Disney item above, I picked up these cheapo plastic ones made by RPF member Muddler, available here from Germany. Listen to ’em clink!:

They’re not perfect (much too small and the details are orange foil instead of black), but they weigh next to nothing, and were super cheap. And of course when it comes to pocket trash, more is always better, so for now they’ll do just fine.
