Artifact ID: Boba Fett’s toy airspeeder

Boba's_airspeeder_modelAppearing (as far as I know) only in the Episode II Visual Dictionary (p. 43) (and of course, subsequent frequent reprints by DK), Boba Fett’s airspeeder model is one of those items where one just has to scratch their head and wonder. The artifact above is meant to be a toy that young Boba Fett kept in his father’s apartment on Kamino, painted to look like a ‘Darien lava-skimmer’.

And here is the base item, which I didn’t even have to look up to know exactly what it started off as (because I had one myself when I was 12 or so) – an Episode I ‘Flash speeder’:

As you can see, the resemblance is uncanny, because this is simply a case of chopping some bits off an existing Star Wars toy, slapping on a model airplane tail, some air ‘scoops’, and a few various greeblies, and giving it a radical paintjob. I especially like that they retained the original projectile cannon, but flipped it 180° to the rear to look like an ‘thruster’!

It’s funny that they didn’t even try to use something somewhat obscure (like the vintage era ‘mini-rigs’), or even something from, I dunno, not Star Wars?
I find this item especially intriguing, because Disney appears to have kept it in their post-takeover ‘canon’, even referencing it in a ‘factual’ article.

ADDENDUM: much later, I managed to find this ship in the background of a sourcebook image by Langdon Foss. See here: Image Analysis: Taxi Ride
