Back about the time last year when I started entertaining the idea of starting a dedicated Rebel persona, I was also thinking about potential outlets and activities I could do. The one that I kept coming back to— inspired by a childhood spent surrounded by living history types at Civil War battlefields—was a public ‘recruitment drive’ for the Rebel Alliance. In brainstorming such an event, I thought that having some propaganda to display would be a good way to add atmosphere.
And so, I started looking to see what was out there. Unsurprisingly, there is a metric ton of Star Wars-themed propaganda on the internet, but not much of it is ‘official’. I wanted something I could talk about in-universe if questioned, and I sure didn’t want to have to tell people that the artwork came from DeviantArt user ‘L314_Forever’ or something.
Luckily, I came across reference to a book recently published, containing a multitude of in-universe artwork: Star Wars Propaganda: A History of Persuasive Art in the Galaxy. While some of the pieces seemed a little lackluster or Photoshop-y, I really liked this one (by ‘Tavris Bahzel’):
However, I thought it would be cooler if it could be even more in-universe…and whenever I want things to be more in-universe, I turn to the ol’ Aurebesh.
We know the Alliance were decidedly diverse and non-xenophobic, and that the Aurebesh was more commonly used by galactic commoners (with the ‘High Galactic’ alphabet (aka Latin characters) was used by more cosmopolitan groups.
Based on this, I decided to paint an Aurebesh version of ‘Liberty For All!’, designed to appeal to and inspire galactic ‘downstrata’ potential Rebels. (I don’t think this is too far of a stretch, as it’s the equivalent of dubbing a movie into a local language).
First I whipped up a quick digital mockup to help me visualize the final product:
For the last few years I had been holding onto a few sheets of ¼” poster-backing material, which I scavenged from a buddy’s wasteful neighbors who were throwing it out. Now I had a project to put them to good use! The finished product (don’t ask me how much time went into this…I paint very piecemeal, and had to work in stages. I would guess at least one audiobook, maybe more) is ~21 by 27 inches, painted with acrylics:
